Praying the collect of the day is a venerable part of Anglican tradition. Generally we use collects written by the great liturgists of the past, but in our EfM groups we often finish a theological reflection by writing a collect which captures what we have learnt from our work that day. Thus we honour the original meaning of the term ‘collect’. In the Gallican rite of the early Western European church, the collect was ‘the collecting of the petitions of the several members of the congregation into a single prayer.’ (Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church)
